What's Your Calling Card this Spring?
I just heard one of my favorite birds in Taylor Park, Oak Park, Illinois-a sign that spring migration has truly arrived. It is the golden crown kinglet-three quick high-pitched bursts as they communicated back and forth together- Tiny birds with a big presence, if you listen. They are on their way to nest in the Boreal Forest, Canada. Check them out at allaboutbirds.org
Reminds me of Mary Oliver's Poem What Gorgeous Thing
I do know what gorgeous thing
the bluebird keeps saying,
his voice easing out of his throat,
beak, body into the pink air
of the early morning. I like it
whatever it is. Sometimes
it seems the only thing in the world
that is without dark thoughts.
Sometimes it seems the only thing
in the world that is without
questions that can't and probably
never will be answered, the
only thing that is entirely content
with the pink, then clear white
morning and, gratefully, says so.
